Edward C. White, M.D.

Edward Cramer White MD, ”Dr Ed,” age 86, died on August 6, 2019. Devoted husband and best friend to Diane for 59 years; brother of Elizabeth; proud father of sons Fletcher, PhD (wife Sabine), Fred (wife Susan), Douglas, MD (wife Melissa) and Jonathan; loving grandfather of 10. International host-father to many. He transformed his Berea solo practice to a group in 1975 as founder of Southwest Family Physicians. CWRU School of medicine benefited from his teaching students, his award winning fundraising and philanthropy. He is fondly remembered for his trademark advice to his medical students, “Listen to the patient - they're telling you the diagnosis," an adage he gleaned from an internship at Oxford, England.

Ed’s community engagement knew no bounds. At Baldwin-Wallace College, he served as Student Health Center director for 44 years, and volunteered as team physician and alumni development team member. He and Diane served as host family to countless domestic and international students. He successfully ran for Berea City Schools’ Board of Education, serving as its president from 1979 to 1983. A trustee for the Berea Children’s Home and Family Services since 1990, he also served as medical director of Southwest Neighborhood Care Center (Free Clinic) and a Rotary Club member. His service earned him the 2010 Grindstone award for lifetime contributions to the city of Berea.

He enjoyed running the streets of Berea with close friends, and skiing at Steamboat, CO. His hosting activities created a large network of international contacts, and led to extensive joyful travels with Diane. His many-splendored life now completed, he will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
