Obituary

John R. Haight , August 20, 1942—March 23, 2024

John was born August 20, 1942 to Thomas and Lucille Haight in Lodi, Ohio.  He attended Medina City School graduating in 1960. After working with his father at Haight's Recreation for two years he returned to Bowling Green State University where he graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He was employed by the Berea City Schools for 28 ½ years. During his teaching career he was the English Department Chairman at Berea and Midpark High Schools. John also coached speech and debate at both schools. John was an active member of Berea Kiwanis for over 30 years serving as president in 1990-91. John was a wonderful teacher and an inspiration to many young people. As one parent put it, "His influence affected eternity."

After his retirement from teaching, John was active in volunteering. He drove a van for Southwest Hospital, delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at the Cleveland Metro Parks as a trail monitor and a receptionist at Rocky River Nature Center.

John also enjoyed working with his father training harness horses. He owned several horses, racing them at Northfield Park and county fairs.

John was a member of Medina #58 F&AM as well as Heritage Congregational Church.  Most recently he attended Strongsville United Methodist Church. Recently, John had been residing at The Renaissance in Olmsted Township.

Predeceasing John are his parents, brother Frank Haight, and brother-in-law Clair Bauer. John leaves his sister, Christina Bauer of Wadsworth, his niece and nephew Heidi and Todd Voss, and his sister-in-law Dolly Haight. The family requests that those who want to commemorate John should contribute to their favorite charity in his memory.
