Susan Carroll
Marsick
Jul 29, 1941 — Aug 25, 2026
Berea
Susan Marsick of Berea died on August 25, 2026 after a full life and a short fracas with cancer. She was 85. Born Susan Lee Carroll to Lantie and Wanda Carroll in 1941, Sue was raised in North Kingsville, Ohio. She was an independent thinker and a straight talker. She had wide-ranging interests, strong passions, and a great sense of humor. We will miss her. After graduating from Edgewood High School in 1959 and Pennsylvania Western University – Edinboro (formerly Edinboro State College) in 1962, Sue married her high school sweetheart, Jack in 1963. Sue and Jack moved to Berea shortly thereafter where they raised three much-loved daughters, Katie, Becky and Susie. After growing up as an only child, Sue and Jack created a home full of family, pets, friends, neighbors, students, and eventually grandchildren. The door was always open and something was always happening. Susan was a woman from the era when having it all meant doing it all. She taught full-time while she and Jack raised their children. She began her professional life as a junior high school English teacher before switching to English as a Second Language. She earned a Masters in Education from The Ohio State University in 1982 and served for 20 years as an English as a Second Language professor at Cuyahoga Community College, teaching and befriending hundreds of immigrants and refugees. When she wasn't working, Sue enjoyed genealogical research, learning new musical instruments, sewing, and playing cards. Competitive to her core, one of her proudest moments was when she got a hole in one in golf. Even though she insisted that her dream house wouldn't have a kitchen, she was a great cook. She loved hiking, camping, the mountains, and rainstorms. She was as happy traveling to Antarctica with Jack as she was spending the day in bed with a good book. She was a devoted grandmother to eight grandchildren, teaching them to live big and make their own sandwiches. Her greatest joy was a house or a camper full of grandkids. After Sue retired from Tri-C in 2001, she and Jack took up traveling in earnest. They traveled to all fifty states and all seven continents. Sue never said no to an adventure and planned her next trip while she was still traveling, so that she would always have the next one to look forward to. She accumulated a wealth of experiences, stories, and wisdom. Susan is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jack; her daughters Katie Windahl (Dave), Becky Darrah (Mike) and Susie Martin (Andy); and eight grandchildren: Leah, Erika, Mitchell, Will, Maggie, Liam, Mary Beth, and Rachel.
