Blaine Richard Joyce of Avon, Ohio passed away January 27, 2025 at the age of 99. He was born November 13, 1925 to Thomas and Teckla (Johnsson) Joyce in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Blaine graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS degree in chemical engineering. He joined the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Baltimore working to advance gas mask technology. This led him to a long career in the carbon products division of Union Carbide. While in Baltimore he met the love of his life, Betty Hadsell and on June 20, 1955, began a wonderful marriage that would last 62 years until Betty’s death in 2018. They raised their three sons in Fostoria and then moved to Berea, Ohio in 1965.
Blaine’s greatest joy was his family. He dearly loved all his grandchildren and delighted in their smiles and laughter and accomplishments. Blaine and Betty enjoyed traveling to visit with their grandchildren and their annual drive to Myrtle Beach every Fall. He was an avid golfer- happy on the fairways or in the backyard hitting golf balls (and occasionally short chips in the family room). We will miss him dearly.
He is survived by sons David (Vickie), Thomas (Laurie) and Jeffrey (Colleen); grandchildren Katherine, Michael, Kelly, Abby (Jessica Keaton), Steven and Chrissy (Josh LaPiana); great-grandsons Lane and Cal LaPiana; brothers William (Kathy) and Frederick (Mary) and sister Frances (Nancy) Olyarnik (Emil).
In addition to his parents and his beloved Betty, he was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas (Betty) and Robert and sisters Virginia Charley (William), Gladys Arnold (Frederick) and Teckla.
Family will receive friends Friday January 31 from Noon until 1:00 p.m. with service to follow at Baker, Kensinger Funeral Home, 206 Front Street Berea, Ohio 44017. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park, 6265 Columbia Rd, North Olmsted, OH 44070.
