Elaine Sekerta Obituary

Elaine M. Sekreta, 90, passed away on March 15, 2025 in Berea, Ohio. Born in Kulpmont, Pennsylvania, she later married Nicholas J. Sekreta and raised four children on Long Island, NY, all while attaining her Bachelor of Arts degree from CUNY at Queens College in 1971 and a Master of Science degree from the C.W. Post Center of Long Island University in 1977.

Elaine had been employed as a librarian by the Farmingdale Public Library and the Oceanside Library on Long Island, retiring in 2005.  She was a member of the Westbury Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

Throughout her life, Elaine addressed social and political causes as they appeared before her.  A fervent anti-war activist, she was arrested for leafletting peace literature in 1970, and succeeded in having the leaflet ban ordinance declared unconstitutional. In 1990 she went to Nicaragua to poll watch helping to ensure election fairness.  In 2010 she visited Costa Rica bearing witness to a country with no army whose president had won the Nobel Peace prize. On a local level, Elaine volunteered at the Westbury Friends School and library, and protected the rights of the homeless people who visited the libraries where she worked. She was an active AFSCME union member.  In her retirement she enjoyed gardening and riding her bicycle to collect plastic deposit bottles to raise money for her benevolences.

Preceded in death by her husband Nicholas and son Roy, her parents Anthony and Mary Chimel, and her brothers and sisters Claire, Delores, Ruth, Rita, Albin, Roy, Daniel, and Ralph, she is survived by her daughters Ellen and Susan Sekreta, her son Nicholas Sekreta and grandchildren Sasha, Quin, and Edgar. A family service will be held on a later date. Memorials can be made to the Westbury Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.
