James John Brown, 68, of Berea, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose boundless love defined his life.
Born in Gloucester County, New Jersey, Jim was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and earning the Bronze Star. His leadership continued as Associate Dean at Kent State University, a congressional staffer for Louis Stokes, and Berea City Council President and Ward 2 Councilman. Jim was an Eagle Scout and member of the Boy Scouts of America and American Legion, Jim held four master’s degrees
Yet, his true joy was family.
Jim shared 38 years of marriage with Kathey Brown, his love for 40 years. He was a proud father to Jennifer (Ken) Tisher, James (Erin) Brown, Amanda (Ian) Ginley, and his late son, Ryan Brown (d. August 2024). His seven grandchildren—Andrew, Connor, Alan, James IV, Champ, Alexandra, and Landon—adored his silly stories, hugs, and omelets. Jim’s life long friend, Michael Jurkiewicz, shared his laughter and adventures, a brother in spirit. His legacy of love lives on in every recipe and laugh shared.
