John Alan Skerl was born on November 25, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio. He departed his earthly life on December 23,2024 at Southwest General Hospice. His family was with him. John attended Cathedral Latin High School and then entered the Marianist novitiate. He was a Marianist brother for 13 years. John attended the University of Dayton and then Purdue University where he obtained a PhD. in sociology.
On May 17, 1980, John married Martha (Marty) Langenbahn. They have two children, Erica Skerl and Joshua Skerl (Kimberly). They have 4 grandchildren: Pierson Spice, age 10, Lilybelle Spice, age 7, Oliver Skerl, age 7, and Isaac Skerl, age 4. John was intensely proud of his children and considered them to be his greatest accomplishment. He also has two brothers, Gary Skerl (Melanie) and Alan Skerl.
He owned his own company, The Social Dynamics Group, for more than twelve years. He also worked for Penton Media and National City Bank. He became a financial advisor as a second career and worked for MetLife. He was president of the local chapter of the American Marketing Association.
John was proceeded in death by his parents, Lillian Skerl and John F. Skerl
John was an avid coin collector and spent many hours on his collections. He was meticulous about his collections and made certain that they were complete and up to date. When we traveled, he always wanted to visit a US Mint if the city had one.
In the past 2 years, because of physical issues, John has been a resident of Riverview Pointe Care Center in Olmsted Falls, Ohio. The staff there love John and will miss him.
Visitation will be at Baker Funeral Home, 206 Front Street, Berea, Ohio, on January 2, from 6-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church in Berea, on January 3, at 10am.
