JOHN "JACK" W. ROOT, age 80, owner and operator of Berea Glass for over
60 years passed on March 5, 2021. He is the beloved husband of Marty, dear father of Rachal Hutnyak, Warren Root, Kaz Scrivens (Ned Dorsey) and Lisa Mullis (Ty), brother of the late Nancy Smego, grandfather of Katie Miklos, Griffen and Addy Root. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Jack was born in Berea Ohio To Warren Root and Anne (Maher) Root. The Maher family was comprised of ten siblings who were all part of the rich tapestry of the city. His parents passed when he was only thirteen leaving him to the creative upbringing that likely could only have been found in a close knit large Irish family.
A red head himself, Jack was always living his life on his own terms. He loved fast cars and was brilliant with all things mechanical and all things requiring thinking unconventionally. He had scores of friends that remained close throughout his entire life.
In 1963 Jack was drafted by the United States Army and would write his sister Nancy often about both his adventures and misadventures alike. His company, the Berea Glass Company was established in a basement of a friend’s home and grew into a small garage before becoming a fixture in the city at the North Point where Front St and N Rocky River Dr converge. Eventually it would move to the historic corner of Depot and N.Rocky River where he, his wife Marty and son Warren serviced the community until the day he had his heart attack at 80 years young.
Jack was a loving husband, and a dedicated father who prepared his children for whatever they may encounter in life. He was a devoted grandfather, a beloved uncle to his sister’s five children - Mike, Angie, Vince , Peggy and Jack. In addition he was a friend to a great many people who will all have countless tales to tell when we’re able to gather and celebrate his colorful life.
Jack had no interest in a traditional funeral, he wanted laughter and irreverence not hand wringing and tears.
So Jack, we shed our tears now as we think of a life moving forward without you and we will honor your wishes and throw a raucous Irish style wake when it’s safe for everyone to gather and laugh loudly as we remember what having you meant to each of us.
Memorial contributions may be made to the S.P.C.A. or the American Heart Association.
