Maryellen Strassburger Davis was born in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 30, 1941. Her father, Charles Strassburger, built houses. Her mother, Luella Strassburger nee Hildebrandt, was a homemaker. Maryellen grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with her older brother, Kurt. Her family moved every few years, based on her father's building schedule. She spoke fondly of biking along the country roads and sitting at her father's building sites while he worked.
Her parents nurtured and encouraged her career ambitions, in a time when women had few professional opportunities. She was a talented and hard-working student. She earned a scholarship to Mount Holyoke College and graduated in 1962. Then she attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, where she was one of three women in her class. She earned her M.D. in 1967 and then completed post-graduate training at the University of Cincinnati and University Hospitals of Cleveland. She was board-certified in Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, which she practiced from 1978 to 2020. From 2002 to 2008 she was Training Director for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at University Hospitals. Over the years she also ran a private practice and consulted at other care-giving organizations in the Cleveland area. She considered herself morally obligated to work hard and help people. She found adolescent treatment especially fascinating.
She married her med school classmate, Bryan Davis, in 1966. Bryan was in the Army in Erlangen, Germany from 1969 to 1972. She had their first child in Erlangen and their second child in Cleveland five years later. She would often pepper her parenting with German phrases, such as "Wir sind zu Hause" upon arriving home. She enjoyed trying new recipes and baking bread. They reminded her of her chemistry training, which she loved. She read avidly. She enjoyed watching British crime dramas. She had a terrific memory. She knew Bryan's geneology much better than he did. She could navigate the roads of Bucks County even at age 76. She could be fierce in conversation, calling people out for their nonsense, even while loving them. She adored her dogs. She enjoyed vacationing in the wilderness of Minnesota, far away from telephones. In her later years, she loved traveling the globe with Bryan.
Maryellen died Thursday, December 21, 2023. She is preceded in death by her father Charles, her mother Luella, and her brother Kurt. She is survived by her husband Bryan, sons Luther and Joshua, daughters-in-law Nellie and Sarah, and grandchildren Wilder, Magnus, and Freya. In lieu of flowers, she has asked for memorial donations to be sent to one of three organizations that meant a lot to her: New Directions (30800 Chagrin Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44129), Positive Education Program (3100 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44115), or the Cancer Center of MetroHealth Medical Center.
