Richard Lowry Obituary

Our beloved Richard (Dick) Benjamin Lowry passed away peacefully on October 29th,
surrounded by his loving family. Richard was 89 years old and resided in Berea, Ohio.
Richard was born on October 16th, 1935, in Columbus, OH. He was the son of Franklin and
Dorothy (McWethy) Lowry and brother of Bob-Bill Lowry, all of whom preceded him in death.
Richard graduated from Berea High School in 1953 and then earned a Bachelor’s Degree from
Baldwin-Wallace College, where he co-captained the football team, wrestled, and ran track. He
later received a Master's Degree from Kent State University.
Richard married Phyllis (Reed) Lowry on June 18th, 1957. Richard and Phyllis were married for
67 years and had two children: Marianne (Lowry) Colbert and Reed Lowry (who preceded him
in death). Richard was the cherished grandfather of Sean, Meghan, and Caitlin Colbert.
Richard began his career as the head football coach at North Ridgeville High School in 1957.
He then went on to Elyria High School as an assistant . Richard became the head coach at
Midpark High School from 1963 to 1970 and served as the offensive backfield coach for the
University of Akron team from 1971 to 1973. He was the head coach at Wayne State University
from 1974 to 1979.
Richard ended his career as the head coach at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. He was
there from 1980 until 1996. He led the 1985 team to win the NAIA Division I Championship and
was selected by his peers as the 1982 NAIA Division I Coach of the Year.
Outside of his coaching career and spending time with his family, Richard found joy in golfing,
listening to music, and enjoying nature.
The visitation will be held on November 8th from 5:00-7:00 PM at Baker-Osinski-Kensinger
Funeral Home.
Burial services will be held on November 9th at 11:00 AM at Lakewood Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory may be directed to Southwest General
Hospice in Strongsville, OH.
Although Richard’s physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to
inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing, and may we carry forth his legacy of love
and his infectious humor in all that we do.
