Robert August Jelen, age 80, passed away on July 23, 2023 in his home. He was born on February 26, 1943 in Cleveland Ohio. He grew up on a dairy farm in Granger, Ohio, and graduated from Highland High School in 1961. An electrician by trade, Robert helped to install the elevators in the World Trade Center in New York City. He was a competitive roller skater in the 1970’s and 1980’s and opened a roller skating rink in the New York State Pavilion’s Tent of Tomorrow on St. Patrick’s Day in 1972 with his skating partner and second wife. Bob then later moved to find work and returned to Ohio. He enjoyed traveling with his family. His sense of humor, smile, hugs, and work ethic illuminated the lives of those around him.
Robert was also a step-father, father figure, and grandfather. He is survived by countless loved ones who meant so much to him. Bob is preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Burkholder Jelen, his father, Lad Jelen Sr., and brother, Lad Jelen Jr. He is survived by his son, Todd Jelen, his daughter Katie Averre, and his grandchildren Nika, Felix, Matilda, Penelope, and Winifred.
A viewing to honor and celebrate the life of Robert will be held on July 27, 2023 from 10 AM to Noon at Baker Osinski Kensinger Funeral Home 206 Front St. in Berea, Ohio. Family, friends, and acquaintances are invited to join us in paying tribute to Robert’s life.
Final resting place at Alexander Harper Memorial Cemetery in Unionville.
