He enjoyed a childhood on the family farm and developed a close friendship with his cousins the late Wilbur Eggert and the late Jim Thomas. The three were handsome young men and enjoyed years of adventures together. They and their families were close throughout their lives.
Tom enlisted in the Army Aircorp in 1942, shortly after turning 18. He worked in airplane maintenance at training bases helping to keep aircraft flying to help America win the war. He also was assigned to guard a visiting pilot's plane, who turned out to be Colonel Paul Tibbets.

Returning home to visit he went on a blind date with his cousin Wilbur, Wilbur's girlfriend Grace and Grace's best friend Marilyn. Tom and Marilyn were married April 23, 1955.
